Nepenthes andamana is a tropical pitcher plant found only on the coast of Phang Nga Province in southern Thailand, where it grows at or near sea level in sandy savannah and grassland. Like other fire-adapted Nepenthes of Indochina, it has a well-developed rootstock.

Nepenthes andamana is a climbing plant reaching about 3 m, with a slender green to red stem about 5 mm thick. Its leathery, stalkless leaves are linear to lanceolate, up to 30 cm long and 3.5 cm wide, light green and often tinged red.

Lower pitchers are egg-shaped in the lower part and narrower above, up to 16 cm (6 in) tall and 5 cm wide, with a pair of narrow fringed wings. The peristome is cylindrical and up to 10 mm wide, and the round to broadly ovate lid is usually slightly larger than the mouth. Lower pitchers are green to orange with red stripes, or red throughout, with a peristome that may be green, white, orange or red. Upper pitchers are tubular, similar in height but narrower, and paler: yellow to white with a white peristome.

The flowers are borne in a raceme that reaches 110 cm in male plants, with about 40 to 190 flowers whose tepals open green and darken to red. Orange or brown hairs occur on the inflorescence and on the edges and tips of the upper leaves, but are shed early. It appears most closely related to N. suratensis and is similar to the other Indochinese endemics N. bokorensis, N. kerrii and N. kongkandana.

Landfræðilegar upplýsingar

Upprunalegt svæði: Coastal Phang Nga Province, southern Thailand (endemic)

Loftslagssvæði: Tropical lowland, sea level to about 50 m

Nepenthes andamana grows terrestrially in sandy soil in open coastal savannah and grassland, from sea level to about 50 m. These wide, sunny grasslands lie along the Andaman Sea coast of southern Thailand. It grows alongside N. mirabilis, including the local variety N. mirabilis var. globosa, and natural hybrids with both have been recorded.

Líkamleg einkenni

Stærð fullorðinna: Climbs to about 3 m; pitchers up to 16 cm (6 in) tall

Vaxtarhraði: Moderate

Tegund gildru: Pitfall Trap

The pitchers are pitfall traps. The inner surface has a glandular, digestive zone covering about the lower half of the pitcher, with a waxy zone above it that is marked with red blotches. The underside of the lid has no appendages but carries numerous crater-like glands up to about 1 mm across, the largest along the midline.

Umhirðuleiðbeiningar
Kröfur um ljós

In the wild it grows in open, sunny coastal grassland. Bright, diffuse light is excellent, and artificial lighting can be adequate if it is bright enough.

Bright light year round daglega

Vatnskröfur

Tegund: Purified water (distilled, reverse osmosis or rain) is safest

Aðferð: Water from above and let the excess drain. Do not keep the pot standing in a tray of water: plants sitting in trays often have dwarfed root systems.

Tíðni: Often enough to keep the mix evenly moist

Rakastig: Very high: at least 60%, ideally near 90%

Jarðvegur

A 50:50 mix of long-fiber sphagnum moss and perlite is a good general starting point. After about a year, knock the plant out of its pot and look at the roots; if they are not exploring the mix, try a different one. In the wild it grows in sandy soil.

pH: Acidic (sphagnum based)

Hitastig

Sumar: Days 86-93°F (30-34°C), nights about 14°F cooler

Vetur: No seasonal change documented

Fóðrun

Tíðni: Optional; at most once or twice a month into the pitchers

Plants that catch insects need no feeding. Growers who want to fertilize can pour a small amount of orchid or epiphyte fertilizer into the pitchers once or twice a month, starting small and watching the effect. Fertilizing is optional.

Fjölgun

Aðferðir: Stem cuttings: cut green stems into segments with about two leaves each, trim each leaf to about a third of its size, set the lower half in the mix and keep the cutting at very high humidity. Roots usually form within about a month. Seed needs a male and a female plant flowering at the same time; it is short-lived and should be sown at once.

Erfiðleikar: Moderate

Ráðleggingar fyrir byrjendur

Treat it as a lowland Nepenthes: warm, humid and brightly lit, watered from above and never left standing in water.

Úrræðaleit

Leaf edges burning and tendrils failing to form pitchers: humidity too low. A small plant with a weak root system: the pot has been standing in water.

Ráðleggingar um ræktun
Do not leave it standing in water General

Water from above and let it drain; Nepenthes kept in a tray of water develop dwarfed roots.

Humidity makes the pitchers Troubleshooting

If leaf edges burn and tendrils stop forming pitchers, raise the humidity towards 90%.

A lowland plant General

It grows wild from sea level to about 50 m, so it needs lowland warmth: days of about 86-93°F (30-34°C) and nights about 14°F (8°C) cooler.

Áhugaverðar staðreyndir

The name refers to the Andaman Sea coast of Thailand.
It was one of the carnivorous plants newly described in 2010.
It is pyrophytic: a perennial rootstock lets it survive fires in its grassland habitat.
Its only known natural hybrids are with N. mirabilis.
Male flowers open green and turn red; female flowers stay green.
No IUCN Red List assessment has been published for it.

Ferill

Nepenthes andamana was described by Marcello Catalano in his 2010 book Nepenthes della Thailandia: Diario di viaggio. The description was reviewed by Alastair Robinson, and Andreas Fleischmann provided the Latin translation. The holotype, Catalano 013395, was collected by Catalano in 2009 at sea level at Takua Pa, Phang Nga Province, and is held at the herbarium of Chulalongkorn University (BCU). Catalano separated it from N. suratensis by its red male flowers, short androphore, outward-bent flower bracts, narrower pitcher wings and cylindrical rather than flattened peristome.
