Nepenthes glabrata is a small highland pitcher plant endemic to Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, where it grows in open, high forest at 1,600 to 2,100 m. Its dainty pitchers are streaked and speckled red on a yellowish background, giving them a hand-painted look.

Nepenthes glabrata is a slender climber with a stem only up to 3 mm thick. Its thin, stalkless leaves are up to 12 cm long and 3 cm wide on climbing stems; on rosettes of mature plants the leaf blade may be greatly reduced or almost absent.

Lower pitchers are small and globe-shaped. Upper pitchers are short-cylindrical to slightly funnel-shaped, 7 to 14 cm (3 to 5.5 in) tall and 2 to 3 cm wide. Unusually, their wings are well developed, up to 10 mm wide, but have no fringe. The peristome is narrow, only up to 2.5 mm wide, with very fine ribs, and its inner edge has no teeth. The lid is almost round, with an unusual palm-like pattern of veins. The red markings on the pitchers are vertically elongated, giving them a stretched appearance.

As the name suggests, the plant is mostly hairless; only the spur and the inflorescence carry fine white hairs. It belongs to the Hamata group (section Tentaculatae) with N. hamata, N. tentaculata, N. muluensis and their relatives, and appears most closely related to N. pitopangii. Where their ranges overlap it hybridises with N. hamata, N. maxima, N. nigra and N. tentaculata.

Geografiese inligting

Inheemse streek: Central Sulawesi, Indonesia (endemic)

Klimaatsones: Tropical highland (1,600-2,100 m)

Nepenthes glabrata grows on the ground in open, high forest in Central Sulawesi, at 1,600 to 2,100 m. At one site it grows alongside N. maxima and the sundew Drosera burmanni at 1,600 m.

Fisiese Eienskappe

Volwasse Grootte: Slender climber; upper pitchers 7-14 cm (3-5.5 in) tall

Groeikoers: Moderate

Lokvaltipe: Pitfall Trap

The pitchers are small pitfall traps. The underside of the lid has no appendages but bears scattered nectar glands up to 0.2 mm across. The narrow, finely ribbed peristome lacks the teeth seen in its relative N. hamata.

Sorggids
Ligvereistes

Bright, diffuse light is excellent, and artificial lighting can be adequate if it is bright enough.

Bright light year round; no seasonal rest daagliks

Watervereistes

Tipe: Purified water (distilled, reverse osmosis or rain) is safest

Metode: Water from above and let the excess drain. Do not keep the pot standing in a tray of water: plants sitting in trays often have dwarfed root systems.

Frekwensie: Often enough to keep the mix evenly moist

Humiditeit: Very high: at least 60%, ideally near 90%

Grond

A 50:50 mix of long-fiber sphagnum moss and perlite is a good general starting point. After about a year, knock the plant out of its pot and look at the roots; if they are not exploring the mix, try a different one.

pH: Acidic (sphagnum based)

Temperatuur

Somer: Days 77-86°F (25-30°C), nights about 18°F cooler

Winter: Same as summer; tropical, grows all year

Voeding

Frekwensie: Optional; at most once or twice a month into the pitchers

Plants that catch insects need no feeding. Growers who want to fertilize can pour a small amount of orchid or epiphyte fertilizer into the pitchers once or twice a month, starting small and watching the effect. Fertilizing is optional.

Voortplanting

Metodes: Stem cuttings: cut green stems into segments with about two leaves each, trim each leaf to about a third of its size, set the lower half in the mix and keep the cutting at very high humidity. Roots usually form within about a month. Seed needs a male and a female plant flowering at the same time; it is short-lived and should be sown at once.

Moeilikheidsgraad: Moderate

Wenke vir beginners

Its small size makes it a good subject for a highland terrarium, where humidity is easy to keep high.

Probleemoplossing

Leaf edges burning and tendrils failing to form pitchers: humidity too low. A small plant with a weak root system: the pot has been standing in water.

Groeiende Wenke
Humidity makes the pitchers Troubleshooting

Tendrils that fail to form pitchers usually mean the air is too dry.

Cool nights Advanced

It grows wild at 1,600-2,100 m. Let night temperatures fall about 18°F (10°C) below the day.

A terrarium highlander General

Because it stays small, N. glabrata suits a highland terrarium with bright light, high humidity and cool nights.

Interessante feite

Glabrata comes from Latin glaber, hairless.
Its red-on-yellow pitchers are often described as looking hand-painted.
Its winged upper pitchers have wings without the usual fringe.
Hobbyists distinguish two forms: compact 'Palo Alto' and larger-pitchered 'Forestville'.
Barry Rice recommends it for a highland terrarium because it is small.
The IUCN Red List assessed it as Least Concern (Clarke, assessment T39662A143960231).

Geskiedenis

Two descriptions appeared almost together in 1984. Shigeo Kurata named it N. rubromaculata on 6 February, and John Turnbull and Anne Middleton named it N. glabratus four days later. Kurata's name had already been used for a horticultural hybrid in 1891, so it is illegitimate, and N. glabrata (corrected to a feminine ending) is the correct name. The holotype was collected on 31 August 1983 in a logging concession in Central Sulawesi at 1,666 m, but it was not found at the Bogor herbarium in 1995 or 1996 and may never have been deposited. Soon after the descriptions, the authors introduced the species into cultivation.
