Umumiy koʻrinish

Nepenthes hispida is a lowland tropical pitcher plant of northern Borneo, known with certainty only from the Lambir Hills of Sarawak and nearby areas. Its stems are covered in dense, bristle-like purple-grey hairs, and its status as a species separate from N. hirsuta is disputed.

Nepenthes hispida has a stem up to 6 m long and 6 mm thick. Its leaves are stalkless, up to 28 cm long and 4 cm wide, with a base that clasps the stem and often runs down it.

The pitchers are rarely more than 15 cm (6 in) tall and 8 cm wide, egg-shaped to ellipsoid below and nearly cylindrical above, with two fringed wings that are often absent on upper pitchers. Upper pitchers are more cylindrical than lower ones. The peristome is rounded and up to 12 mm wide, and the lid is ovate.

Its most distinctive feature is the very dense covering of bristle-like hairs, 1.5 to 4 mm long, on its purplish grey stems; N. hirsuta has shorter hairs on brown stems. It also differs in its stem-clasping leaf base and in the shorter staminal column of its male flowers. Some botanists regard the two as extreme forms of one species, and Jan Schlauer treats N. hispida as a synonym of N. hirsuta. In the wild it is only known to hybridise with N. reinwardtiana.

Geografik ma'lumotlar

Mahalliy hudud: Northern Borneo: northeastern Sarawak (Lambir Hills area) and Brunei

Iqlim zonalari: Tropical lowland (100-800 m)

Nepenthes hispida grows in shady kerangas (heath) forest on steep sandstone ridges, often alongside Eugeissona palms, at 100 to 800 m. Cheek and Jebb record it as common around the Lambir Hills of northern Sarawak, with one collection from nearby Brunei and the type from the Lawas River. Clarke and Lee restrict the name to plants from the Lambir Hills area.

Jismoniy xususiyatlar

Yetuk o'lcham: Stem to 6 m; pitchers rarely over 15 cm (6 in) tall

O'sish sur'ati: Moderate

Tuzoq turi: Pitfall Trap

The pitchers are pitfall traps with an oblique, ovate mouth, a rounded peristome and an unbranched spur up to 5 mm long at the base of the lid.

Xizmat uchun qo'llanma
Yorug'lik talablari

In the wild it grows in shady heath forest. Bright, diffuse light is excellent, and artificial lighting can be adequate if it is bright enough.

Bright light year round; no seasonal rest har kuni

Suvga bo'lgan talablar

Turi: Purified water (distilled, reverse osmosis or rain) is safest

Usul: Water from above and let the excess drain. Do not keep the pot standing in a tray of water: plants sitting in trays often have dwarfed root systems.

Chastotasi: Often enough to keep the mix evenly moist

Namlik: Very high: at least 60%, ideally near 90%

Tuproq

A 50:50 mix of long-fiber sphagnum moss and perlite is a good general starting point. After about a year, knock the plant out of its pot and look at the roots; if they are not exploring the mix, try a different one.

pH: Acidic (sphagnum based)

Harorat

Yoz: Days 86-93°F (30-34°C), nights about 14°F cooler

Qish: Same as summer; tropical, grows all year

Oziqlantirish

Chastotasi: Optional; at most once or twice a month into the pitchers

Plants that catch insects need no feeding. Growers who want to fertilize can pour a small amount of orchid or epiphyte fertilizer into the pitchers once or twice a month, starting small and watching the effect. Fertilizing is optional.

Tarqatish

Usullari: Stem cuttings: cut green stems into segments with about two leaves each, trim each leaf to about a third of its size, set the lower half in the mix and keep the cutting at very high humidity. Roots usually form within about a month. Seed needs a male and a female plant flowering at the same time; it is short-lived and should be sown at once.

Qiyinchilik: Moderate

Yangi boshlanuvchilar uchun maslahatlar

Treat it as a lowland Nepenthes: warm, very humid and brightly but diffusely lit.

Muammolarni bartaraf qilish; nosozliklarni TUZATISH

Leaf edges burning and tendrils failing to form pitchers: humidity too low. A small plant with a weak root system: the pot has been standing in water.

O'sish bo'yicha maslahatlar
Do not leave it standing in water Troubleshooting

Water from above and let it drain; a pot standing in a tray stunts the roots.

Check the stem hairs Advanced

Long, dense, bristly hairs on a purplish grey stem separate N. hispida from the very similar N. hirsuta.

Warm and humid General

A lowland plant from 100-800 m. Keep days around 86-93°F (30-34°C) and the humidity at 60% or more.

Qiziqarli Faktlar

Hispida is Latin for bristly.
Its stem hairs can be up to 4 mm long.
Barry Rice notes that the stem hairs are the most reliable way to tell it from N. hirsuta.
The IUCN Red List lists it as Lower Risk/conservation dependent, from a 2000 assessment (Clarke et al., assessment T39666A10249804).

Тарих

Günther Beck described Nepenthes hispida in 1895, citing a Low collection from the Lawas River at 2,000 to 3,000 ft. The matching specimen carries a printed Burbidge label, and Beck probably read its handwritten label as Low's. Macfarlane placed it under N. hirsuta in 1908, and Danser listed it as a doubtful synonym of N. hirsuta in 1928, noting that Beck's description gave another idea. Matthew Jebb and Martin Cheek restored it as a species in 1997, citing its stem-clasping leaf base and its hairs, but its separation from N. hirsuta remains contested.
