Descripción general

Nepenthes kampotiana is a lowland tropical pitcher plant of southern Cambodia, eastern Thailand and southern coastal Vietnam. It grows in open, seasonally wet savannah and grassy scrub and survives dry seasons and fire from a woody rootstock.

Nepenthes kampotiana has leathery, nearly stalkless leaves that are linear to lanceolate, with a long tendril. Lower pitchers are egg-shaped in the lower third and narrower above. Upper pitchers are cylindrical with a bulbous base. The peristome is narrow and usually unstriped, and the lid is round with a heart-shaped base. The plant is hairless except on the leaf axils, tendrils and pitchers.

It belongs to the N. thorelii aggregate and is closely related to N. chang. Like its relatives N. smilesii and N. thorelii, it does not usually form climbing stems but a robust rosette with several growing points. Stems may grow in the wet season but dry out in the dry season, and the plants resprout from a lignotuber.

Its classification has varied. Jebb and Cheek merged it with N. anamensis in 1997; Stewart McPherson reinstated it in 2009, and fieldwork in Vietnam in 2015 supported keeping it separate from N. smilesii. Jan Schlauer still treats it as a synonym of N. smilesii. Hybrids with N. bokorensis and N. mirabilis are known, and hybrid swarms occur where it grows with N. smilesii.

Información geográfica

Región nativa: Southern Cambodia, eastern Thailand and southern coastal Vietnam

Zonas climáticas: Tropical lowland (0-600 m) with a marked dry season

Nepenthes kampotiana is a pyrophyte of open, seasonally inundated savannah and grassland, at 0 to 600 m. In southern Vietnam it was found in fairly dry, open grassy scrub on sandy soil near the coast, at or just above sea level, in Phuoc Buu National Park. The region has a wet season from May to October and a dry season from late November to April.

Características físicas

Tamaño maduro: Robust rosette; stems formed in the wet season

Índice de crecimiento: Moderate

Tipo de trampa: Pitfall Trap

The pitchers are pitfall traps. Lower pitchers are swollen at the base and narrow above, and upper pitchers are cylindrical with a bulbous base, under a flat, round lid.

Guía de cuidados
Requisitos de iluminación

In the wild it grows in open grassland and scrub. Bright, diffuse light is excellent, and artificial lighting can be adequate if it is bright enough.

Bright light year round a diario

Requisitos de agua

Tipo: Purified water (distilled, reverse osmosis or rain) is safest

Método: Water from above and let the excess drain. Do not keep the pot standing in a tray of water: plants sitting in trays often have dwarfed root systems.

Frecuencia: Often enough to keep the mix evenly moist

Humedad: Very high: at least 60%, ideally near 90%

Suelo

A 50:50 mix of long-fiber sphagnum moss and perlite is a good general starting point. After about a year, knock the plant out of its pot and look at the roots; if they are not exploring the mix, try a different one. In the wild it grows in sandy soil.

pH: Acidic (sphagnum based)

Temperatura

Verano: Days 86-93°F (30-34°C), nights about 14°F cooler

Invierno: No cultivation rest documented

Alimentación

Frecuencia: Optional; at most once or twice a month into the pitchers

Plants that catch insects need no feeding. Growers who want to fertilize can pour a small amount of orchid or epiphyte fertilizer into the pitchers once or twice a month, starting small and watching the effect. Fertilizing is optional.

Propagación

Métodos: Seed needs a male and a female plant flowering at the same time, and should be sown at once. Wild plants grow as rosettes with several growing points from a lignotuber.

Dificultad: Moderate

Consejos para principiantes

Treat it as a lowland Nepenthes: warm, humid and brightly lit, watered from above.

Solución de problemas

Leaf edges burning and tendrils failing to form pitchers: humidity too low. A small plant with a weak root system: the pot has been standing in water.

Consejos de cultivo
Humidity makes the pitchers Troubleshooting

Burned leaf edges and tendrils without pitchers mean the air is too dry.

Lowland warmth General

Keep days around 86-93°F (30-34°C) with nights only about 14°F (8°C) cooler.

Images and plants of N. kampotiana and N. smilesii are often confused. N. kampotiana has hairless stems and leaves; N. smilesii has short hairs on all vegetative parts.

Datos interesantes

It is named after Kampot in Cambodia, near which the first specimens were collected.
Like the pitcher plants of northern Australia, it survives harsh dry seasons and fire from a lignotuber.
Its long inflorescences probably hold the flowers above the surrounding grasses.
Its presence in Vietnam was predicted in 2009 and confirmed in 2015.
The IUCN Red List assessed it as Least Concern in 2018 (Clarke, assessment T48973548A143970556).

Historia

Paul Henri Lecomte described N. kampotiana in 1909, together with N. geoffrayi, from Cambodian material collected by Geoffray near Kampot; N. geoffrayi is now a synonym. Jebb and Cheek reduced both names to synonyms of N. anamensis in 1997. In 2009 McPherson reinstated N. kampotiana, following Martin Cheek's interpretation, which F. S. Mey had also supported, and Mey designated its type material in 2010. In 2015 Chiem Nguyen Anh Vu found populations in southern Vietnam, confirming that the species occurs there.
