Apžvalga
Nepenthes rosea is a tropical pitcher plant known only from Krabi Province in Peninsular Thailand, where it grows at 450-520 m. It is named for the inside of its pitchers, which is usually a uniform pink. It was described in 2014.
Nepenthes rosea is a terrestrial climber up to 4 m tall with a slender stem only 3-4 mm in diameter. Its leaves are leathery and lanceolate, 10-24 cm long and 1.5-3.5 cm wide, with an acute to acuminate tip, and they clasp the stem with only a short extension down it.
Lower pitchers are 8-15 cm tall and 3-4.5 cm wide, ovate in the lower part and tubular above, with two fringed wings down the front. They are green to light pink with dark pink stripes on the outside. Upper pitchers are 11-18 cm long, tubular and light green. In both, the inner surface above the digestive zone is uniformly green, white or pink, never spotted, and the narrow peristome is green, white or light pink. The overall impression is of a delicate, rather gracile plant.
The species belongs to the N. thorelii aggregate, a group of Indochinese species with narrow leaves and inflorescences, leaf bases that run down the stem, and an underground rootstock. These are adaptations to a climate with three to six months of drought and frequent fires. N. rosea differs from the other members in its thinner stem and, except for N. bokorensis, in its shorter leaf extension along the stem.
Geografinė informacija
Gimtasis regionas: Krabi Province, Peninsular Thailand (known from a single mountain)
Klimato zonos: Tropical hills (450-520 m); grown under glass outside the tropics
Grows at 450-520 m (1,480-1,710 ft) in open forest, clearings and scrubland, on sand and humus in varying proportions. It grows both on flat ground and on vertical rock faces, where its roots reach deep between the rocks. On the type mountain the tropical forest gives way to clearings with shrubby vegetation at about 500 m.
Fizinės savybės
Subrendęs dydis: Climber to 4 m (13 ft); lower pitchers 8-15 cm (3-6 in), upper pitchers 11-18 cm (4-7 in)
Augimo tempas: Moderate
Spąstų tipas: Pitfall Trap
Each pitcher is a watertight pitfall trap at the end of a leaf tendril. The ribbed peristome helps retain prey and guide it in, and the slippery inner walls stop insects from climbing out. In Nepenthes the lid carries nectar glands that attract prey; in N. rosea its underside is densely covered in small crater-shaped glands. Tendrils of upper pitchers coil to anchor the climbing stem.

Šviesos reikalavimai
Bright, diffuse light; artificial light can be enough if it is bright. In habitat it grows in clearings and scrub, in partial shade and full sun.
Bright light year round kasdien
Vandens reikalavimai
Tipas: Purified water (distilled, reverse osmosis or rain) is safest
Metodas: Water from above to keep the mix moist and let the excess drain. Plants left standing in trays often develop dwarfed root systems.
Dažnis: Often enough to keep the mix evenly moist
Drėgmė: High: at least 60%, ideally near 90%
Dirvožemis
A 50:50 mix of long-fiber sphagnum moss and perlite is a good general starting point. In the wild it grows in sand and humus. Check the roots after about a year and change the mix if they are not spreading through it.
pH: Acidic (sphagnum based)
Temperatūra
Vasara: Days 86-93°F (30-34°C), nights 14°F (8°C) cooler
Žiema: Same as summer (lowland tropical species)
Maitinimas
Dažnis: Optional; fertilizer at most once or twice a month into pitchers
An orchid or epiphyte fertilizer can be poured into the pitchers once or twice a month, starting with small amounts and watching the effect. It is optional.
Dauginimas
Metodai: Stem cuttings with about two leaves each, leaves trimmed to about a third, kept in very high humidity; roots usually form in about a month. Seed needs a male and a female plant flowering at the same time and should be sown immediately.
Sunkumas: Moderate
Pradedančiųjų patarimai
Keep it warm and humid, water from the top, and expect a slender, delicate-looking plant: thin stems and softly colored pitchers are typical.
Trikčių šalinimas
New leaves without pitchers or with burnt edges: humidity is too low. Weak, small root system: the pot has been standing in water. Pale pitchers in strong light are normal for this species.
Auginimo patarimai
Rooting cuttings Advanced
Cut green stems into two-leaf sections, trim the leaves to a third, and keep them in a closed bag at 100% humidity. Cutting the stem under water improves rooting.
Water from above, then drain General
Keep the mix moist by watering from the top. Do not leave the pot standing in a tray of water, which stunts Nepenthes roots.
Pale is normal General
N. rosea keeps only a faint red coloration even in full sun. Its beauty is the uniform pink inside the pitcher, not bright outer color.
Įdomūs faktai
About one third of the roughly 300 wild plants studied grew a small rosette of leaves partway up the flower stalk, a feature its describer had not seen elsewhere in the genus.
In both male and female plants, 30% to 100% of the flowers on a raceme can be paired on forked stalks.
Its stem is about half the diameter of its closest relatives.
Some plants grow on vertical cliffs above a drop of about 500 m, out of reach of collectors.
Even in full sun its red coloration stays faint.
Istorija
In the winter of 2012 Marcello Catalano came across photographs of a pitcher plant taken by a tourist on a mountain in Krabi Province, together with satellite coordinates. No member of the N. thorelii aggregate had been recorded from Krabi. In autumn 2013 he visited the site with Trongtham Kruetreepradit and found plants that differed from all known relatives, and after comparing them with the other species, and with encouragement from François Mey, the two returned in September 2014 to take measurements.
They described the plant as Nepenthes rosea in AIPC Magazine (issue 36) in December 2014, from a type specimen collected at 500 m in October 2014. The name was chosen to avoid revealing the location: it refers to the pink pitcher interior rather than to the mountain or province. Catalano judged the species not to be at great risk, because it grows on protected land and many plants are out of reach on cliffs.
